The Open Knowledge Initiative (O.K.I.) develops and promotes specifications that describe how the components of a software environment communicate with each other and with other enterprise systems. O.K.I. specifications enable sustainable interoperability and integration by defining standards for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Through this work O.K.I. seeks to open new market opportunities across a wide range of software application domains.

The O.K.I. project was initially launched in 2001 through a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and in collaboration with a number of like minded organizations. Today the O.K.I. Phase II project is housed at the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology, a part of MIT's Dean of Undergraduate Education Office.

What are OSIDs?

The O.K.I. project has developed and published the Open Service Interface Definitions (OSID ?s), whose design has been informed by a broad architectural view. The OSIDs define important components of a SOA as they provide general software contracts between service consumers and service providers. This enables applications to be constructed independently of any particular service environment, and eases integration. The OSIDs enable choice of end-user tools by providing plugin interoperability.

OSIDs are software contracts only and therefore are compatible with most other technologies and specifications, such a SOAP, WSDL. They can be used with existing technology, open source or vended solutions.

OSIDs are a local language service definition and bindings of them are provided in Java and PHP, and investigatory work has been done with bindings for Objective C and C#.

Segue V2 Powers New O.K.I. Community Site

O.K.I. launched its new community site this week using Segue v2, the curricular content management system developed at Middlebury College that makes extensive use of the open service interface definitions (OSIDs).

"We are very pleased that we could develop O.K.I.'s own community site with Segue v2, which in turn has been designed from the ground up using the architectural model of O.K.I.'s Open Service Interface Definitions." said Jeff Merriman, Associate Direcfor for the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology at MIT and Executive Director of O.K.I. "We are indeed 'eating our own dogfood'."

This new version of Segue is built on top of Harmoni, an application framework also developed at Middlebury that includes implementations of nearly all the OSIDs. "By abstracting out common services such as authentication, authorization, hierarchy, repository, ID and so on into a framework, we are better able to reuse these implementations across applications" explains Alex Chapin, Middlebury's Principal Curricular Technologist.

Segue v2 allows for collaborative editing, commenting and versioning of its managed assets, using fine-grained authorizations that enable various sections of the site to be managed by O.K.I.'s core contributors and affiliates, while other areas are open for public comment. In particular, the Conversations area has been created as a place to better engage the global community of developers and technology decision makers around various issues and ideas related to interoperability and educational technology.

In addition to the new O.K.I. main web site, Segue v2 will also be used for a new community site targeting the vital and growing community that has eveloped around OSID-based Repository interoperabiltiy. This site will be available soon.

OSID Service Bus Community Project Launched

Last November a number of O.K.I. OSID developers gathered in Cambridge Massachusetts for an OSID V3 "Deep-Dive" meeting to review the current V3 draft and discuss issues to address and potential projects moving forward. One of the projects discussed, and identified as an important direction by many of those assembled, is the development of an enterprise service bus based on the V3 OSIDS. The Open University of Catalonia has already proven the viability and value of such a bus implementation of a number of the V2 OSIDs as part of the Campus Project

Mark Norton, of Nolaria Consulting, volunteered to start up a new project group to further explore an OSID V3 Service Bus. Anyone is invited to join the Google group at http://groups.google.com/group/osid-service-bus.

This discussion group is open to everyone interested in contributing or just tracking the conversation. If you are interested please join the group. A Google account in required to join this group. The group will be documenting any code in the group wiki, track issues with the issue manager, and save prototype code in the source control system (subversion). Released code will be cross posted to Assembla.

The goal is to build a standard way to make OSID requests, across a network, across multiple programming languages and potentially coordinating service requests across multiple elements of enterprise infrastructure. Such systems are commonly referred to as *enterprise* service busses. Usually, such ESB system uses web services, CORBA, RMI, AJAX, REST, message protocols, etc. to send a request to one or more service providers (that may be local or remote). The provider creates a response that is communicated back to the requesting application (or service).

The ESB hides details how communication happens, where the service providers live, etc. It can also provide commonly used features like publish/subscribe messaging, broadcast messages, point to point messaging, journaling, transactionality, etc. The OSID Service Bus (OSB) project proposes to first explore the ideas using some simple test cases (login, get asset, etc) hopefully using two or more languages. The project also plan to investigate existing ESB open source offerings to see what might be adopted as the basis for an OSB platform.

This year's OpeniWorld event is part of the IMS Learning Impact global conference being hosted by the Open University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain 11-14 May, 2009. OiW will turn its attention to the tangible benefits of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). An architectural approach to software development and interoperability is only valuable to the extent that it provides real benefits for real people. In tough economic times, educational institutions must pay special attention to whether such value is truly being achieved.

Service Oriented Architecture, and related service-based interoperability standards, offer the promise of easing the effort and reducing the cost of integrating software applications and services. The Summit will it's focus on repository systems interoperability and federation and provides an opportunity for you to learn about the latest advancements in technologies available for designing and implementing interoperable content solutions.

OpeniWorld turns the spotlight on community use of interoperability techniques, specifications and standards to ease and enhance access to content and knowledge with an emphasis on interoperable solutions for content repositories. Repository OSID Workshop at OpeniWorld:Europe2008

Jeff Kahn of Verbena Consulting will lead this 1-day Repository OSID Workshop on June 24th in Lyon, France, as part of OpeniWorld Europe 2008. This will be a hands-on workshop for software developers interested in applied repository interoperability. The workshop will introduce programmers to implementing the Repository OSID interoperability interfaces or using implementations of the interface for federated search or federated deposit. In January 2007, M.I.T. announced its intention to form a stable partnership with like-minded organizations to consolidate growing support for the interoperability specifications developed by O.K.I. Over the past year, we have engaged in a number of activities to further this work, such as: continued development of the OSIDs; launching of OpeniWorld; and support of the rapidly growing and successful community of Repository OSID adopters.

In response to the continuing success of O.K.I., the DUE Office of Educational Innovation and Technology at M.I.T. is launching the O.K.I. Phase II Project as part of its educational interoperability initiatives. Phase II is intended to work toward the O.K.I. vision and plan the transition of O.K.I. from an initiative at M.I.T. to a community organization. The following activities will be launched in this Phase of the O.K.I. Project:

Release of key Third Generation OSIDs to provide solutions for specific customer needs; Defining appropriate governance processes to ensure the OSIDs are stable and predictable; and Developing and publishing OSID illustrative documentation

M.I.T. has contributed to the support of this program with direct budget and staff. However achieving the essential activities, which will lead to the sustainability of O.K.I. will require resources beyond MIT’s commitment. To make this project a success, O.K.I. Phase II invites support from all of our partners in two ways: (1) an up-front financial contribution to help fund the project, and (2) active engagement in key O.K.I. project activities and community events.

I. Purpose

Prepare for the transition of the Open Knowledge Initiative (O.K.I.) from a project at MIT to a sustainable community organization, which will be either internal or external to MIT. Create and implement the on-going structure and processes by which O.K.I. growth and development can occur in an efficient and cost-effective way.

II. Principal Investigators

The PIs of the O.K.I. Phase II project consist of representatives of the organizations that have helped to instigate and define O.K.I. Phase II.

The CAMPUS project, promoted by the Secretaria de Telecomunicacions i Societat de la Informació (STSI) of the Generalitat de Catalunya, is born from the will of eight Catalan universities of having a virtual campus in free software and under the license of GPL (General Public License). This campus should allow offering higher education both in a completely online fashion and combining online and offline.

This initiative wants to become an international reference in the field of e-learning because %u2013 among other issues %u2013 it will support up to 10,000 users connected at the same time and its user interface will be designed following user-centered designed methodologies; taking into account issues such as usability, accessibility and content personalization.

The CAMPUS was born within the Catalan universities system and will be open to the world. The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya is responsible of the coordination and the technological leadership of the project and will be developed taking advantage of the knowledge and experience that each partner can bring to it.

This project is part of the Digital University program promoted by STSI. The goal of the program is to facilitate the transmission and sharing of knowledge via the information and communication technologies.

The CAMPUS is developed by several groups from the Catalan universities and its duration is of 18 months from the 1st of April of 2006, when the development of the project was officially opened.

Harmoni

The Harmoni Project is an effort led by the Curricular Technologies group at Middlebury College to build an application framework and standards-based infrastructure bus to support the rapid development and easy maintenance of curricular it projects. The project is built entirely using PHP's OOP (Object Oriented Programming) model, allowing the framework code to be easily extended and enhanced.

At the core of the Harmoni Application Framework is an implementation of The Open Knowledge Initiative's (O.K.I) Open Service Interface Definitions (OSIDs). The OSIDs are a standard service-oriented API that defines a broad set of services that are germane to IT projects in the education field yet also fitting for broader uses. Among the services defined in the OSIDs are the following:

Id Management
Repository

While Harmoni is a modular framework of which most any component can be used in a stand-alone way, the built-in OSID implementation provides a core of services that will serve most applications' needs for user-management and authorization, with the Repository providing many data storage and retrieval needs.

There are many educational applications and systems in the market today. Thanks to the work of organizations like IMS Global, many of these can represent their data using a variety of standards ranging from those for content packaging, questions and tests to those for metadata and identity. These "data representation" standards allow data to be migrated from one system to another. Most educational applications also work with various standardized protocols such as SOAP, Z39.50, SRW, POP and IMAP. These allow systems to communicate with each other and exchange content in real time.

The O.K.I. open service interface definitions (OSIDs) seek to standardize interfaces to basic functionality so that one application (an OSID consumer) can access specific data and functionality from another application (an OSID provider) in real time. For example, a digital asset management system can make its collections of assets accessible to a learning management system (LMS) by exposing an implementation of the Repository OSID. The LMS then need only be able to consume that OSID (i.e. be able to call functions in the digital asset management system as defined by the OSID).

DEFINITION:

O·SID [o'cid] n. O.K.I. uses the term Open Service Interface Definition (OSID) to differentiate its service based specifications from the broader class of application programming interfaces. The definition of these services enforces a programming model that maintains a sharply delineated boundary between O.K.I. compliant applications and O.K.I. service implementations.

OKI publishes OSIDs, which are not quite like typical specifications. The OSIDs are a kind of conceptual API, which can be expressed in different programming languages. The bindings to these languages are interfaces (or the nearest thing to that concept that the language has). The interfaces require implementations by service providers, which are separate releases by vendors or other contributors.

In V2 (the current version) of OKI a lowest-common-denominator Java language binding acted as both language-specific binding and specification for the OSIDs. As new languages are being added, an XML expression of the "conceptual API" has been released (XOSIDs, available on Sourceforge), along with XSLT for transformation into language-specific bindings. This is the approach that is being followed for V3 of the OSIDs. Both the XML-based specification and the language-specific bindings will be part of the revision process for V3.

Types

What OKI calls "Types" are crucial to the interoperability of the OSIDs. The OSIDs themselves are written very generically. It is only through a common understanding of the out-of-band "Types" that applications can make use of the most important functionality. For example, the seach methods in the Repository OSID require a Search Type. It is only by defining a commonly understood set of Search Types that different repositories can be searched in the same way.

The Types themselves are not part of the OKI specification per se; they are expected to be developed by the community as implementations are created. Implementors of OSIDs are strongly encouraged to submit their Types to the community at large.

Although the OSIDs represent an approach to a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), it is different from the more protocol-oriented approaches and has some new concepts to offer. A good place to begin is in our Library, with The Conceptual Architectural Framework.

The Repository OSID covers storing and retrieving digital content, referred to as Assets, as well as information about the Assets. Assets, examples of which include: documents, course material, assessment item, images, video, audio, etc, reside in Repositories which have names and descriptions and which support a specific set of Asset Types.

Repositories are themselves organized by the RepositoryManager that keeps track of repositories and supports certain operations such as searching for Assets across repositories. Associated with each Asset Type is a RecordStructure that defines the format of information comprising the Asset or information describing the Asset. An Asset can have content as well as Records, which are data in the format defined by the Asset’s RecordStructure. Assets may contain other Assets.

The Authentication OSID gathers required credentials from an agent, vouches for their authenticity and introduces the agent to the system. The Authentication OSID permits an application to abstract the authentication process without having to manage the details of the underlying authentication service.

The Hierarchy OSID manages parent-child relationships among elements. In addition to simple tree structures, the OSID supports hierarchy that are recursive and have nodes with multiple parents. User authorizations are usually stored as a hierarchy.

OSID use Agents to represent individuals or processes that invoke specific Services. An example of an Agent is a specific Student, John Doe. This Agent might have the DisplayName “Doe, John ?, the Id 123-45-6789, and a Type indicating a Student. Agents can be organized into Groups. A Group also has a DisplayName, Id, and characterizing Type. In addition, Groups have a description. A Group can contain zero or more Agents. A Group can contain zero or more Groups (subgroups). An Agent can only be added as a member of a Group if it is not already in the Group, but the same Agent can be a member of a subgroup. Agents can have sets of Properties associated with them. Each set of Properties has a Type. The Agent OSID provides a variety of methods for managing these Agents and Groups

Since the introduction of the first OSID definitions in 2003, and the current version 2 OSIDs in 2004, the O.K.I. project has recieved countless kudos and complaints. OSID V3 strives to strengthen all that is right with the OSIDs while at the same time addressing the numerous issues that developers have raised over the years. From the troubles with Types, to issues with Iterators, and the general challenges raised through applying the OSID model to multiple programming languages we listened to what developers had to say.

In 2006 the O.K.I. Project began the more formal process of eliciting RFCs and developing a new set of service patterns aimed at easing the task of developing using OSIDs, while at the same time increasing interoperability. The result is a proposed interface definition specification that we fully expect to last well beyond the next decade
